Disabling flash in the Steam browser?
Just wondering whether anyone knows of any way, whether by configuration or plugin, to disable Flash in the Steam in-game browser.
I often have tf2outpost.com open in the background while I play TF2. I don't want to close the browser, because sometimes I bump my trades during the respawn wait. I don't so much mind seeing the ads when I'm actually looking at the browser - the real annoyance is when sound suddenly starts playing on top of my TF2 game when I'm not even looking at the browser.
This morning it was happening like every 3 minutes. Normally it's not that bad, more like once every half hour, but it was intolerable to the point that I simply closed the browser and didn't check the trades as often.

Re: Disabling flash in the Steam browser?
I feel kind of guilty when I completely block all ads. That said, I feel like an advertiser is sort of overstepping their bounds when they start making super flashing ads that take over half the screen and make all kinds of noise. The Domer wrote:If it's just ads that are bugging you, just use adblock+
I don't object to seeing ads so long as they're reasonable. Blocking Flash and also clearing my cookies every time I close my browser (which is what I do in Firefox) seems like a fair compromise.
That said, is it possible to install adblock+ into the steam in-game browser?

Oh, for some reason I glazed over the bit where you wrote that you are using the in-game browser. I don't think it has any functionality at all, I hardly call it a browser. I don't know how to help you there.

From a quick Google (man the SPUF is horrible to venture into) it looks like you'll need to use a system-wide add blocker, like a custom hosts file.

Can you just use a real browser in the background with whatever plugins or settings you want?

Re: Disabling flash in the Steam browser?
Sometimes I do this. Only problem here is that when using tf2outpost outside of steam, clearing the cookies every time I close the browser makes it forget my machine and then I have to do the Steamguard email loop again, so it takes more setup time.Stevo wrote:Can you just use a real browser in the background with whatever plugins or settings you want?
But the Flash-based sound ads seem to be getting much more common, so I might end up to resorting to this more often.
If there were some way to have Flash in other browsers but not in the Steam-based browser, I would. I certainly never consciously installed it for Steam. Anyone know how to install it for other browsers while avoiding getting it in Steam?NerevarineKing wrote:I never even installed flash for the steam browser.

You have to add the Pinion web site to your hosts file. Pinion is the ad network that is most widely used.
