I still remember when I tried to make my first map. Allow me to put this as clear as possible: experiment. It's likely that your first map won't have a groundbreaking layout, nor will anyone remember it after you publish the second beta. But if you throw as many entities as possible into it, and configure them correctly, you, sir, have just learned what it takes to make a great map. And you've had fun making bizarre tweaks to gameplay with your assortment of ideas! Don't settle for existing prefabs and design concepts, make every one of your strangest ideas come true. On that note...
