Finally updating my computer

Post by One_Medic_Army » Mon Sep 17, 2012 1:01 am

So I'm finally going to update my computer, I've given it a new motherboard, more RAM, and a new videocard over the years, but it's still pretty much the same thing I put together back in 2007.
Current specs:
Q6600 quad-core Intel chip (2.4ghz)
4gigs of DDR2-800 RAM (this hurts)
ASUS P5Q-PRO motherboard (My 680i-LT lost it's SATA connectors)
GTX 460 video card

Now what I'm thinking of doing is finally updating to a LGA 1155 socket and an Ivy Bridge quad-core, some DDR3 1600 speed RAM (8 gigs of it), and an nVidia 660TI
Video Card+RAM
CPU+Mobo
Total incl tax+shipping: $693.86, with $25 of mail-in rebates.

Just wondering if anyone here had some better suggestions on specific components? Either for quality or price point. I'd prefer to keep this sub-$700.

Keep in mind that the cpu you selected isn't unlocked for easy overclocking.

None of the cheaper quads are to my knowledge. I'm not spending another $50 just to be able to over-clock.
Are you referring to the multiplier or the actual operating frequency?

If you aren't looking to OC the system (and you don't really need to - I know I never have!), that looks like a pretty good combination of stuff. It'll definitely give you a big jump over your current setup. If you do want to OC (I hear it can make a helluva difference), the 3570K runs $20 more, and you can probably find a different mobo to package with it, to make up for the combo deal savings. Whichever your prefer, looks like you've got some solid components.

Thanks for the tip Alizee, unfortunately I'm looking at like $55 more for a 3570K if I get a deal on it.

Back when I got the Q6600 I tried overclocking it, got a modest OC due to my crappy board at the time, and then gave up and realized it wasn't worth the effort for me.

If you live near a MicroCenter they are currently running a good promotion for in store pick up. i5 3750k for $189 and if you also buy a MOBO at the same time they knock $50 off the MOBO, only catch is it has to be in store pick up. Just a thought and a point towards a non advertised special.

They closed the one near me in July, unfortunately.
