HP Slimline Upgrade

Post by BETTEH » Mon Sep 10, 2012 6:51 pm

Long story short a buddy of mine bought his wife a Slimeline for her birthday, and she wants to be able to play a few games on it that it currently can not handle well.

Here is the exact PC specs and all.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=3856275

So I am currently browsing Newegg for 3 items.

Vidya Card
PSU
More Ram (if possible)

with a budget of roughly 150$

So far I got as a possibility.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814102958 Vidya Curd

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151090 PSU

Not even sure where to start with the ram, if I could get a matching 2gig stick that would be great.

Is what I believe it is. 2GB Module 2048MB-800MHz DDR2-800 PC2-6400, 240p DIMM, 1.8v

Any help or insight would be great, never messed with a Slimline before.

The only thing I have to say is to make sure you have a double slot for that video card. Might want to make a measurement with a ruler on all your part locations, just to be sure it will fit.

You're going to need a ruler to take measurements. I don't think slimlines have full ATX-sized powersupplies, either. It may be better to just wait and do a full build. That is an ancient A64x2. My 5200+ was from 2006. That's 6 year old tech.

edit: Also that is a mini-ITX mobo. The case is likely designed for use with a mini-ITX PSU.

This computer... do not upgrade it. It will never play games to anyone's satisfaction. A crystal ball I have.

HP Slimlines are notoriously difficult to upgrade in any meaningful way (for gaming), for the reasons people mention above. Mobo, PSU, and case are not large enough or powerful enough for many standard parts. Obviously those ones you've linked are meant for SFF stuff, but as others have said - get a ruler. That card is still bigger than the mobo.

HERE is a link to HP's specific sheet for that mobo, with info on slots and upgrades.

For RAM, something like this 4GB kit might be the right place to look. If you can find the timings and manufacturer of what's on board, going for a single 2GB stick additionally would probably be fine. I'm always paranoid about mixing and matching RAM though.

As a person who is using a HP computer the computer is way to small for a graphic card that size. Might want to go for a smaller card like a nvidia gt 430, it's small but it can play most games.

Of course that's me guessing since I have a 220 gt in my computer right now.
