Registering a web domain

I want to register and make a personal website as a means to teach myself HTML. Anyone have recommendations for registration and hosting? Never done this before.

I have Godaddy Economy Linux hosting along with my domain name through them. I have had no issues with them. There are a ton of hosting companies out there. I'm sure other people on here will have some other great recommendations to other hosting providers.


You could also make a local apache webserver and just use a dyndns name to play with HTML. That's free.

I use GoDaddy and it gets the job done. You can get hosting with it, too.

Like bullet said, a domain name is not required if you just want to learn how to make websites.

With most online hosts you get a free domain name now.

For cheap i usually do Dreamhost.

If you just want to play around with html then download LAMP software which installs a local server on you computer with Apache, PHP and mySQL among other things and you can access it via your local web browser on your network.

It's relatively simple and there's lots of support for the various products out there.

I use HostGator for hosting, and GoDaddy for the domain as well as my email addresses. Happy with both.

But if it's just for learning, XAMPP in a local environment works well too, and you can use Dropbox to host sites as well.

At the time or pricing, GoDaddy was cheaper but I liked the simplicity of hostgator. It may be a few bucks more but it has an easier interface to use. That's if you use it.

I just make my stuff then upload it via ftp so that would eliminate the use of the web host UI.

For cost, goDaddy is a good option though. I just didn't like all the commercially stuff and flash banner crap everywhere.

I recommend getting a web host that uses CPANEL. It's more or less a standard and it's nice to have.

For hosting I've been with HostGator for a few years now and would recommend them. Search for coupon codes before you sign up, there are always tons out there.

I've used lunarpages hosting for close to a decade. I think I'm paying $3 to $4 a month for their service. I would advise against godaddy as a registrar only because of the voluminous horror stories of having to deal with them if anything remotely goes wrong.

With their substantial user base there would be no doubt have issues come up. Any web hosting will have issues. It would just be smaller for smaller companies.
