Avatar Upload No Workee

I have been trying to upload a new avatar for a couple of hours (yes, I know what I am doing).
The system acts like it working but no avatar is displayed. It even shows a blank spot with the option of deleting the current avatar.

I tried both JPG and GIF formats and the image and file size is well within restrictions.

Any ideas?

i've foudnt he linking to off site url works the best. actually uploading to the site can restrict the actual file size sometimes ( or it used to) so you would have to save it as a really low quality jpg. I would jus tput it on photobucket or something.
