Windows XP Folder Permissions

Post by BlackHawk » Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:39 am

I need a quick hand. I just had to reinstall windows on a friend's computer. She had her stuff in my documents set to private. I just reinstalled windows and did not format the computer so her files were still there but we can not get in to them. I need an easy guide I can send to her that she can do it herself

prey she did not encrypt the data. encrypted data can only be access with the certificate that is automatically generated while account creation. If the certificate is lost, the data will be too, err will be inappeasable.

If its just folder permissions, you just need to have a user account that is in the group administrators. or as the administrator itself you can access almost every folder.

As an administrator you would also be able to claim ownership of that folder, afterwards you are able to realign the rights on the folder.

If it was Windows XP Professional, odds are that the data is encrypted. If I remember right, XP Home doesn't encrypt any data.

Data is not encrypted by default, this has to be activated manually.

Oh if its a XP home, you probably want to boot into Safe Mode to get the Security tab on the folder properties.
