You have to fire a second before they start pouring for it to work though, if you fire right when they are at the generator it won't damage them until they are finished.

the spit needs to hit before they start pouring, otherwise the spit travel time and spread time will not come in fast enought to make a diference.

As carpe said, an adrenaline shot will make you pour even if there is spit because it will take about half a second to pour.
