I just had a broken file that didn't re validate even after a fresh download.

Here is a process that worked for me to get it fixed.

Do a validation of your files.
If it failed wait until the Steam downloaded the broken files and re validate!

If the validation fails again, change the content server, and start over.

For me the Chicago content server worked, the German one seams to be broken. (who cares about the German one. I know :D )

Good luck. And hopefully less crashing L4D2 sessions.

How does one change the content server?

BTW did that fix your mic issue?

I always validate any game files after a large install, including if it was a validation install.
I laughed at my friends who beat me in-game because they didn't spend the extra 5 minutes to validate first, I had the last laugh when they had corrupted files.

Steam -> File -> Settings -> Downloads -> Download region

apparently it broke again for me, so it seams that there is a bug while validating the files or the whole file is on most servers broken. who knows. you can try to validate as often as you like it most likely will always fail with one file.
