[WIP] melee_Thunderdome

Post by Mad-Hammer » Wed Apr 02, 2008 7:00 am

So, I started on this little ol map yesterday, mostly to see if I could do it. I set the dome up with low gravity inside it to simulate the movie version. For those of you who might be interested in this sort of map, what other details would you want to see in it? I'm open to suggestions.

Great choice! Haven't seen the movie in forever, so that's all the input I've got. But still.... great choice.

Let me know when you've got it ready for playtesting. Several people asked if there was a Thunderdome map for MeleeMania.

That's frickin' awesome, Hammer! :cooler:

The only thing that I can think of, I'm not sure if you can do with TF2. As a matter of fact, I doubt it. It would involve dropping and picking up weapons. But whatever!

Just the low grav thunderdome is sweet enough! :D 8)

I've been tweaking the gravity. Just working on small details like spawn set up and such. I haven't found anything yet on the weapons but dome does have scattered health in it.

Hammer!

You beat me to it! I was gonna do it, we should collaborate!

Oh man, I'm really curious to see how you decided to do the dome. Is it actually dome shaped?

Did you use displacement with subdivision?

Or, is it all neatly planned out brush work? ...triangles clipped at a certain angle?

I was going to make a bunch of metal I-beams with the chicken wire in between.

TWO MEN ENTER! ONE MAN LEAVES!

If I could make a suggestion...put platforms for spectators to stand all around the outside of the dome like the movie.

That and subtly inscribing "TheVille.Org" somewhere. ;)

Depending on how much time you wanted to put into it, you could make a cp_bartertown map with the thunderdome being the middle cap.

I can't wait to try this map! :cooler: I can almost guarantee it will be used in Melee Mania once completed 'cause I know it's gonna rawk. 8) There's no rush. Even after the Outback Attack, there is at least 7 more Melee Manias to go. ;)

l3, I'm glad you brought this up. I used arches to construct the metal I beams. I created a sphere, hollowed, clipped, and textured it in chicken wire.

The displacements are just subdivided by two. I thought about bleacher seating and the security wire separating the two teams.

We can always add a Ville Billboard and of course a sign with "Two Men or Ladies Enter, One Man or Lady Leaves"

I'll pm you the vmf later today before we do anything else with it. You may have better ideas as far as the low gravity goes. I experimented with using the push entity but that failed miserably. I'm now just using the gravity entity with a setting of .1

This is an excellent idea considering our reigning Melee Mania champ is a lady. ;)

Here's Some Early Screenshots. Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Piece.

That cap in the middle needs to go as it's a melee map, that is, unless someone wants it to stay. I'm open to suggestions as I have no clue what I'm doing.

OK Im holding my piece.... now what....

:P

 bravo Hammer...

great job in this early stage!

I would def. get rid of the cp. I love all the custom signs (are they textures or decals?) either way, those should stay.... I keep forgetting to make some good ville ads to put in my maps.

I have some good ideas to tinker with in regards to making a dome. Not that your's is bad by any means... I think in my version I can add a spectator area where the action is projected onto a big "movie" screen (ever seen on those "bugs" where players' images are being casted on to the skybox?)

Let me put some stuff together... you look at it and tell me what you think.

Well, took out the cp in the middle. I have the gravity set at .05 which allows even a heavy or solly to get a good jump. I may add the push entity yet to force the player to the middle of the map. Not a hard push, just a gentle nudge to the middle.

Added in some other details which should make things interesting like....... once you go in, God help ya if ya get out, well on the opposing team.

We could do an alpha test of this thing sans two of my textures which I screwed up and left on my other comp. Let anyone interested look it over and suggest what they want changed.

Yah, you could kill the cp. As you say, it's not really necessary. Simply effing awesome, Hammer!
