So...
A 3d object composed of all equilateral triangles has 4 sides (a cube)
A 3d object composed of all squares has 6 sides (a cube)
I think 3d object composed of all pentagons has 12 sides if all sides must be the same length
I also think that a 3d object composed of all hexagons has 28 sides if all sides must be the same length.

Based on this, if Saxon Hale had to compress us into cubes before he could turn us into squares, what would he have to compress us into before he could turn us into octagons? How many sides would this object have?

Or am I wrong about the pentagons and hexagons?

I wasted 45 minutes on this, but couldn't take it further than 6 sides or recognise any pattern.

I don't think a 3D solid can have all of its sides be octagons, because their corner angles are too obtuse. Maybe in 4D, but I'm no expert t here.

You can easily make a 3D solid that has 6 octagonal faces and 8 triangular faces by lopping the corners off a cube.

But I think the shape Hale would use here would simply be an octagonal cylinder/tube - that's the simplest to crush down to an octagon with one mighty-thewed blow.

Unfortunately probably not. There is a small list of people with the ability to upload maps and it is a holiday weekend... We'll just have to have fun with what we've got and worry about fancy maps another time!

Yes, I think an Octagonal Prism would be easiest to crush, although that is easy to calculate the number of sides: it's 10: one for the top, one for the bottom, and one for each side of the octagon.


But I'm still just really frustrated with my inability to calculate or recognise a pattern for 2D => 3D Shapes.
