Weird error message

Post by Rohan » Fri Feb 23, 2007 3:22 pm

every time i have restarted me computer today and tried to activate steam for the 1st try this error message would come up and stop me from activating it

"Steam.exe (main exception): unable to start steam engine: *SteamStartEngine (0x12e8b8) failed with errot 200: connection reset, WinSock error 10054 "connection reset by peer"
then when i would try for a 2nd time steam would activate but i had major lag with wicked high pings (50-100+) more than it should b and i can't play like that as i'm sure most of u can't...so...any suggestions...or any idea wtf is wrong???...i ran norton once and it found nothing and ran Ad-Aware SE 3 times and got stuff 2 out of the 3 times so it should be all flushed out and i'm still get the error message and have ping problem

kthx

See, once you delete the hacks and reboot steam u are good to go :)

No idea whats going on, best bet is to reinstall steam.

Look at it this way. This is a POSITIVE situation, not a problem.

When ever something like this pops up, I run and tell momma,
drag her into the computer room and say, "LOOK!! The damn thing is
broken. I've tried a MILLION times, and no matter what I do, it can't
be fixed"

Now remember, be sure to have at least one arm behind either yourself
or behind her, with your fingers crossed, when you tell her this.

Next comes the sob story, telling her all the things you can't do now (even
make up some) and you can't possibly go on without getting it replaced.

Now, run down to CompUSA (or equivalent) and show her that 20,000 Mhz,
quad core, liquid-cooled system with all the bells and whistles (Let's see,
Falcon's fastest gaming system will do) and tell her "This is the ONLY system
that comes closest to what I have now.." (don't forget the crossed finger thingy)
and tell her the payments are not a problem.

Shoot, might as well order the 6mb DSL upgrade while your at it.

Is there something else running using up your bandwidth? Has your game ping changed?

If 907th is too slow, try fpsbanana.com or mardymouse.co.uk

Almost sounds like a Trojan or something. Try manually looking and seeing if there's any files that you don't know of in your HDD. Alot of times Trojans will steal bandwidth. Try downloading AVG free edition and ditching NOrton.

This may sound silly, but sometimes when steam crashes or is reloaded it resets your connection speed. Log into steam and go to settings and check internet and see what your connection speed is set at. It reset mine once to 14.4.

Rohan, wait, there is one more drastic measure

Re-install windows and everything you have....yes its a HUGE pain to do, but it is the only surefire way to get rid of all malicious software on your computer and overall boosts performance to back to brand new status. I do it at least once a year to keep my comp running like new. Takes me about 7-8 hours to uninstiall and re-install everything (due to all of the restarts) but in my opinion its worth it.
