Is a shotgun or a flare gun better for the pyro? Depends on how good you are with a flare gun, and if you're playing against other pyros or on a map with lots of water. I prefer shotgun, but that forces me to avoid just about all long-range encounters, as I would only be able to reflect projectiles...
